What hosting actually involves
You cannot see what you store
Shards arrive as encrypted blobs under random identifiers, with no filename, owner or file type attached. There is nothing to accidentally look at.
You never hold a whole file
Placement guarantees your nodes receive fewer fragments than the recovery threshold. Even colluding with yourself gets you nowhere.
Uptime is measured, not promised
The agent heartbeats and answers random shard-integrity challenges. Payouts scale with the ratio you actually deliver.
Nearly no load
Storing fragments is disk, not compute. The agent idles at negligible CPU and only wakes to serve reads or answer an audit.
Requirements, honestly
- A machine that is online most of the time. Occasional sleep is fine — erasure coding already assumes nodes vanish. Chronic absence is not, and shows up in payouts.
- Payouts accrue monthly against verified capacity and are recorded per node, so you can see exactly which machine earned what.
- Deleting shards, tampering with them, or failing audits reduces your reputation and eventually removes the node from placement. The data survives regardless.
